Roshan Nayattukunnumel Gangadharan

NG Roshan is an award winning multi-faceted artiste with niche skills- He is a prosthetic make up specialist, special effects specialist, actor, theater producer, theatre technician, sculptor and academician all rolled into one. He was trained in acting and theatre from the Thrissur School of Drama and taught Technical Theatre- involving make up, property designing etc at National School of Drama, Delhi from 2002 until 2009.

Roshan trained in/studied Specials effects and Prosthetics at the Greasepaint School of Make-Up (2000-2001) in London upon receiving the Charles Wallace India trust-UK Government Arts scholarship.

Theatre Studies

Roshan was introduced to theatre by his father who was a theatre actor in the local theatre groups in Kozhikode, Kerala. Roshan used to accompany his dad for his performances as a child and that's how the interest in the art form developed. He however went on to complete a three-year graduation at the Thrissur School of Drama- The course was then called Bachelor of Theatre Arts -BTA.

At Thrissur school of Drama Roshan's optional subject was acting and he was fortunate to be taught by professors of acting from India and all over the world.

Theatre Production

In Delhi at the National School of Drama, Roshan had the opportunity to associate himself with many theatre groups -and some great names like Dr. Anuradha Kapoor, Anamika Haksar,B.V Karanth,Bansi Kaul, Roysten Abel and Barry John -involving himself in various aspects of theatre production like lighting, make-up property design etc

After returning to Kerala, Roshan started his own theatre group which was called Host O Theatre- the idea was to work with daily wage labourers, farmers etc-get involved in their daily life and then involve them in theatre. This endeavour fetched him entries-twice into the International Theatre Festival -once in 2004 and the second time in 2007. Aside from this ,Roshan has participated in and conducted many theatre workshops in places like Assam, Meghalaya Manipur and many other places across India

Acting in Theatre

Out of the many theatre productions he was involved in, he acted in one of the plays which went international. This play got him a standing ovation at the Bonne Biennale in Germany and he also travelled to Japan and many other places to perform this play. Coincidentally this play was titled The Make-up and Roshan played the role of a makeup artist- It was a two-member play where he was one of the actors and the other was Harish Khanna

Entry into Indian Cinema

Roshan had no intention to enter commercial cinema because, both by training as well as at heart he was a theatre artist and technician-It was purely by chance that he got an opportunity to venture into commercial Malayalam cinema with the renowned director Hariharan-His very first film being Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja with Megastar Mamooty. Working as a make- up artist since then on, Roshan has worked in more than 65 plus commercial films spanning many languages like Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and English. His notable works include Pazhassi Raja, Maya Mohini (State Award winning), Naval enna Jewel (State Award winning) in Malayalam ,Viswaroopam with Kamal Haasan in Tamil, Kaashmora in Tamil (Award winning), V in Telugu and Malgudi Days in Kannada.

As an actor

He has performed as an actor in small but significant roles in the Malayalam films Poppins with Jayasurya and the film Ezra starring Prithviraj. He played a key role in the 2019 Malayalam film Eelam where he plays the dual role of a sportsman and a fan who is very fond of the sportsman (Both played by Roshan). Those who have seen Roshan in his acting best often wonder why he is into make-up!

Academician

National School of Drama aside, Roshan has lectured across the country -Pearl Academy of Fashion, Amritsar University, Central University of Hyderabad , Cultural centre/Forum at Himachal Pradesh, FTII in Pune and National Institute of Design Ahmedabad.
